During an interview, Sint Maarten member of Parliament: Mr. Rolando Brison (political party: United Peoples St. Maarten Party (UPP)), expressed his concerns by advising that the Aruba, Curacao and Sint Maarten Parliament bodies must take their time and analyze COHO before arriving to a final decision. THE INTERVIEW Brison declared the following: “Well the COHO in itself, I think it's no secret, I don't think that there is any member of Parliament in Aruba, Curacao or Sint Maarten are saying that the law as it is, is perfect, it's great, it's wonderful, no! It has its flaws. It has various degree of how people see it. I put it at a high level of concern, in terms of it bypassing the Parliaments power, the ambiguity. Ok, what exactly is a COHE going to inject in our economies? There is lot of concerns! And before just simply, for or against, what I am calling on, is take our time. The Dutch government has worked on this law for 21 months, before it was agreed upon. I don't think it's fair now to ask the Parliaments of these countries to just in 6 weeks or 10 weeks or whatever. By April that was the proposed entry date (inbreng datum). I think it's very unfair and irresponsible to expect us to just rush through this. My call to all of the Parliaments is to take out time, analyze this very careful and make sure we are doing the right thing.” When asked about if he agrees or disagree with COHO, he explained: “We are against of anything that infringes our local, regional and international law. He further stated: We are not against the COHO at this stage because the point is, we want to build our case, we want analyze this law. We want to see if there are opportunities for amendments. The COHO as is, has a problem, yes! But I believe that we want to do our due diligence, take our time, and then formulate exactly what the position of our party and eventually the position of the Parliament should be.” Among other things he also said: “I can say we are against the COHO as is, but what if we present amendments that completely changes it from what it is, to be something more like an investment bank? I have no objections to the Dutch government saying, you know what, we want to provide money for reforms, send in your projects to this entity, we will negotiate the way in which the money will be distributed and this entity called a COHO will say, you come in eligible (in aanmerking) for this money or not. If it is on that type of a level, that is something understandable because then, the choice still lies with the country, we have our independent choice to say, you know what, we don't agree with the way you think we should reform. My concern is, the reforms should be for the people of Sint Maarten, for the benefit of us. It should not be dictated to us. The COHO as is, does have those concerns.
