During an interview, Sint Maarten member of Parliament: Mr. Rolando Brison (political party: United Peoples St. Maarten Party (UPP)), informed the public on his legislation to address the COVID-19 pandemic for tourist. THE LEGISLATION Among other things, Rolando Brison explained: “In discussions with members of Parliament Mc Williams, about a draft law, that I am presenting in Sint Maarten, which is for a national health levy (note; The Health Levy could make it possible for everyone to pay the same amount of money for the same level of health insurance). She felt it would be a good idea, and the committee of health of the Parliament of Curacao, though it would be good to see if we can share this peace of legislation with Curacao. I believe that Sint Maarten, Curacao and Aruba, we should work together more when it comes to legislation. I believe if I am working on something in Sint Maarten that can benefit our people, our brothers and sisters in Curacao and Aruba, then this should happen more often, where we exchange of legislation by means of our committee.” He continued: “This came about in January of 2021, when our islands were opening the country. We felt that there needed to be an additional layer of protection to protect our tourist but also protect our locals and in term of making sure that if someone gets COVID-19 or gets in a accident, that there is coverage for them because, every tourist that is in a hospital bed, is a hospital bed that can be occupied by a local. Now, that has evolved, into something, well, do we make this permanent? Where, there is an income that is generated. So you have your social insurance collectors fee, but then you provide a service, a well needed and important service for your tourist.
