Willemstad, Curacao. In a 2009 interview, the 2013 assassinated Curacao political leader; Helmin Wiels, had words that the world probably needed to hear and understand about Curacao and the Netherlands which involves the situation of Venezuela, the US and Colombia.
According to the assassinated political leader; Curacao is caught in the middle of conflict from that time, and they maybe creating enemies and situations that Curacao can not handle.

These words are still relevant today; a decade later, and almost 6 years after Wiels assassination!
The following is an excerpt from the interview translated from papiamentu into English:

Wiels: He (Hugo Chavez) is militarizing Colombia completely, in the flagrant intent of vietnamization (making it like in the Vietnam War) of this area, the region. There will be war! Let us not lie to each other.

In the second place, he (Chavez) is putting troops and a military base in Guyana, which is at the Venezuela borders, look at the map and everyone can see it. And, in Curacao, he (Chavez) is Fortifying, the base at Hato (Curacao). He (Chavez) has 2 years already that he (Chavez) has made tunnels, bunkers of 60 centimeter of expressors that are very much weaponized with weapon-grade concrete and a lot of other weapons that he (Chavez) transported from Ecuador to bring them to Curacao.

So, the war, is a war for petroleum (oil), the war is a territorial war and we are in the middle of it. Because, we have allowed this in a stupid manner, by allowing the United States (American) military base since the year 2000; here in Curacao.

Reporter: In any case, if this war start, what does that mean since we get petroleum from Venezuela, gasoline, fruits, vegetables?
We get a lot of things, what does that mean for our country, Curacao?

Wiels: You, yourself, can't belief that the Venezuelan Government is crazy to continue providing combustible to planes that will go and attack their territory.
You need to understand that, that would stop their supply/provision of combustible immediately.

In the same place, you need to understand that we are a military target, we became a military objective automatically at the moment that a conflict warlike (bélico) at our region. Because; it is logic, when you see the..[unfinished], when you go on the internet, online you can see, the US Deployment or US Troops around the planet, you can just see how around the world, how the United States is positioning their troops. They (The US) are surrounding Iran in the middle East and, in the Caribbean, Latin America, they (The US) are surrounding Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia.

So, it is logical that this area would become into vietnamization (making it like in the Vietnam War). The question is to what day you will find a conflict.

Reporter; What, we on Curacao could still do to ease this or eliminate all of this?

Wiels: Well, we have said for a long time, it is one of the things we have warned, and warned, but, there are some people that, their brain just aren't working.
In this country, we have said that, we don't want any military base.
When you are small and vulnerable, you need to do like Curacao was doing for decades and centuries, do business with everybody.
In the moment that you pick a side for one of these big forces, you become the vulnerable one, because the small one, never has the power.
The small one needs to use intelligence and do business with everyone, that is what we always have done. But, right now, we picked a side by allowing a US military base in Curacao and mind you, Netherlands is the one getting billions a year; for the use of "their territory"; which is Curacao, and we do not get nothing from it, but what we do get are enemies within our region.

Throughout the international community, we are seen; right now as traitors, as problem seekers, as the one who are looking for problems in the region, and the thing is; we are not and we are not getting a cent out of any of this!
