Willemstad, Curacao. Allegedly. the Curacao government ruling party (MFK) would like the famous prostitution center (brothel) "Campo Alegre" to remain as a prostitution center.
WHY CAMPO ALEGRE IS CLOSED?
Allegedly, the former owner: Mr. Robert de Groot (seventy plus (70+) is suspected by the Public Prosecution Office aka (OM) of being involved with and participating in a criminal organization and of laundering money and goods.
In 2013, the court determined that the Dutchman had to pay the country of Curacao; a sum of only; fourteen-point-two million guilders (fl. 14,200,000). Apparently, the OM will proceed with the auction and collect the money to allocate it for the national crime fund.
CAMPO ALEGRE ROLE IN SOCIETY
Allegedly, according to the MFK party, Campo Alegre fulfills a social role and the closure in June 2020, at the start of the COVID19 pandemic crisis, has moved illegal prostitution to the city center (Punda and Otrobanda) and the public would like to see an end to this. Prostitution in Curacao is legal (under governmental watch) but the government has allegedly set up a Campo Alegre working group to oversee the current laws and regulations of prostitution and the prevention of human trafficking.
Campo Alegre, which is also known as Le Mirage, was a large open-air brothel in Curacao operated since the 1940s. Originally the location was an army encampment at Seru Fortunaweg (near Curacao International Airport). It has been closed since 2020.
