Willemstad, Curacao. According to Mr. Wopke Hoekstra: Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, the Dutch government is committed to establishing an international anti-corruption court.
RUSSIAN PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN AND CORRUPTION
The minister appears to feel that widespread corruption is endangering national security, stability, and prosperity, he used Russia as an example to make his point. He stated, among other things, that Russian President Vladimir Putin, runs a government of “blatant corruption” and that Russia's aggression on Ukraine undermines regional stability.
The Minister expressed: “Corruption by public officials is not only a financial problem, but it also undermines democracy and the rule of law in a country and increases inequality among the population. And it is simply criminal. Not only does the country itself suffer, but corruption also harms the interests of other states.”
Following a consultation in Luxembourg, the minister stated that all European Union member countries want the rule of law to prevail. According to the minister, the people involved and responsible for the “obvious crimes” perpetrated in Ukraine, cannot get away with such, and hence perseverance is essential. He remarked, “That was the impression I got from my colleagues. So let's make sure we live up to that.”
NETHERLANDS PARTNERING WITH OTHER COUNTRIES TO FIGHT CORRUPTION
The Minister will seek support for an anti-corruption court by collaborating with other countries. The Netherlands, Canada, and Ecuador will host a conference on fighting corruption later this year.
On Monday, Hoekstra and his EU colleagues met with Karim Khan, the International Criminal Court's lead prosecutor (ICC). He updated the Ministers on the status of the inquiry into Ukrainian war crimes. Hoekstra declared that the Netherlands would contribute an additional 1 million euros to the ICC.
WHAT IS CORRUPTION? CORRUPTION IN EUROPE
According to the European Commission (EC) website, corruption is: “the abuse of power for private gain. Corruption takes many forms, such as bribery, trading in influence, abuse of functions, but can also hide behind nepotism, conflicts of interest, or revolving doors between the public and the private sectors. Its effects are serious and widespread. Corruption constitutes a threat to security, as an enabler for crime and terrorism. It acts as a drag on economic growth, by creating business uncertainty, slowing processes, and imposing additional costs. Although the nature and scope of corruption may differ from one EU State to another, it harms the EU as a whole by lowering investment levels, hampering the fair operation of the Internal Market and reducing public finances.”
The EC expressed that : “37% of EU businesses consider corruption to be a problem for them when doing business. EB [FL457] 60% agree with the statement that bribery and the use of connections is often the easiest way to obtain certain public services.”
