Twitter: @JJosephaNews Willemstad, Curacao. Netherlands Minister of Foreign Affairs: Mr. Wopke Hoekstra (CDA political party), wrote to parliament that the Dutch Customs Authorities (DCA) seized 14 superyachts at some Dutch shipbuilders, because they believe that the superyachts are owned by Russians. According to the minister, the yachts are barred from being formally delivered and handed over to the owners. SANCTIONS AGAINST RUSSIA CAN GET WORSE? Due to sanctions implemented against Russia, Belarus, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and oligarchs, luxury ships are not allowed to leave the country, this, according to the report. The government is increasing its implementation and enforcement of sanctions against Russia in response to criticism from the Netherlands' Second Chamber and the lower chamber of parliament. Former minister: Mr. Stef Blok was named sanctions compliance coordinator on Monday. In the Netherlands, he will supervise the freezing/blacking of Russian assets as well as the seizure of Russian real estate and ships. RUSSIAN ASSETS FROZEN IN THE NETHERLANDS Twelve yachts are under construction, including superyachts exceeding 35 meters, and two ships are in repair, according to the statement. An inquiry into 15 shipyards and five yacht dealers is currently ongoing. 516 million euros in Russian assets have been frozen, and 155 million euros in transactions have been banned (blocked) in the Netherlands, according to Hoekstra. WHY RUSSIA AND VLADIMIR PUTIN ARE BEING SANCTIONED? After Russia invaded Ukraine, US 46th president: Joe Biden, imposed many sanctions, more than 100 countries followed. According to the US White House: "Each partner will implement actions consistent with their national processes. These actions will collectively ramp up pressure on Putin and build on the unprecedented package of economic sanctions and export controls the United States and over 30 countries have already imposed on Russia." According to the Official Website of the US International Trade Administration, the US has many reasons for sanctioning Russia: "U.S. businesses should be aware that the United States imposes sanctions on Russian persons (individuals, entities, and vessels) in response to conduct including Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea, invasion of eastern Ukraine, election interference, malicious cyber activities, human rights abuses, uses of chemical weapons, weapons proliferation, illicit trade with North Korea, and support to Syria and Venezuela. Further sanctions on Russian persons, entities, and ships involved in the Nord Stream 2 projects have been imposed, and additional measures are also under consideration, although the U.S. Government waived sanctions on Nord Stream 2 AG, the company behind Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to Germany, and its chief executive, in May 2021. While U.S. companies and individuals can lawfully engage in a broad range of business activities involving Russia that are not subject to sanction, penalties for violating U.S. sanctions can be severe. Therefore, American companies are advised to familiarize themselves with potentially applicable sanctions and to conduct thorough due diligence to ascertain whether a particular type of business activity or customers, clients, suppliers, or partners may be subject to sanctions."
