Willemstad, Curacao. April 20th, 2022. Less than twenty-four hours after public notice on Damen Shiprepair BV allegedly having to fire a large amount of the workforce, some workers received a noticed that they may have to be let go. The President of The Curacao Contractor Association (ACC); Mr. Fredi Trujillo; spoke liberally; exposing the figurative dirty linen in the closet groove of Damen Shiprepair dirty secrets of unlawful treatment of contractors; who complained about the company, and the involvement of the then government of former PAR leader and former prime Minister Eugene Philip Rhuggenaath's Cabinet of 2017 to 2021, with a final question of where is the 100 million guilders and that to correct a wrong from; that time at the dry dock; would cost more than twenty (20) million.
DAMEN: "YOU'RE FIRED?"
In the morning, some Damen Shipyard repair workers in Curacao went to work to passively protest; on the matter that some of them received a phone call yesterday announcing that they may be in the group that would be fired!
Mr. Trujillo finalized; "In the end, the responsibility will fall upon the government. Mr. Caldera signed a lot of wrong contracts, putting and leaving the government to be responsible; where it doesn't have anything to do with it! The government has the responsibility of giving account and reasoning for us to continue forward and go forward with our Dock as well!”
Reportedly; Mr. Angelo Meyer (Chairman of trade union PWFC (Petroleum Workers Federation Curacao) consulted with a lawyer to discuss what can be done to resolve the situation of the dock workers.
THE ASSOCIATION OF CURACAO CONTRACTOR'S PRESIDENT EXPOSED DAMEN'S DIRTY LINEN?
According to Fredi Trujillo; from The Association of Curacao Contractors (ACC) stated; "I am Mr. Trujillo, the President for the Association of Curacao Contractors. We came here right now, to support and to sustain the situation, which is a regretful situation. We; as contractors, have gone through these types of situations before!"
The President of the Association of The Curacao Contractors stated; "Five (5) years ago, when the Dutch people came to take over our Dry Dock! We warned, we communicated this to The Rhuggenaath government; that these situations could happen; because, they (Damen) did not come with clarity!"
Mr. Trujillo continued; "They came, Damen came, and let's speak clearly how this goes! How this thing happened! Damen came with another company, which is not Damen! The company named "Braspenning", the company that came with Damen to do the labor on the Dock property! This is where the problem started! What did they then do? They (Damen) contracted the labor process on Damen, but they gave it to the other company, called "Braspenning PBC"!"
Mr. Trujillo explained; "Let's say it's like a shop in a shop! The situation started there with a problem, and we spoke with Mr. Caldera and, the answer from Mr. Caldera; who is the CDM Holding Director, he took us out! Every contractor that used to work for seventeen (17) to twenty (20) years on the Dry Dock property, were removed from the Dock property, because we complained regarding the irregular situation! That should not have been like that! It is not acceptable! Right now, the situation, our workers, the people now must pay these situations, because of a malversation from a contract that was signed in the Mr. Rhuggenaath government, on top of Mr. Caldera! As Curacao contractors, as work givers, we have the right to complain and the workers have also the right to complain! For their legal rights, for them to continue working. The situation can not continue like this."
Mr. Trujillo exclaimed; "Look! To start off with, Damen did not come to do any type of investments in Curacao! The investments were done by local establishments, local banks like The Maduro and Curiel Bank (MCB) and Caribbean First Bank. The investments also came from the government. who invested more than one hundred million guilders (100,000,000 ANG.), in the Dock property!"
Fredi Trujillo finger-pointed; "But, the money disappeared! Right now they (Damen) are in a financial deficit! In five (5) years; more than 100 million guilders disappeared!"
Mr. Trujillo continued and accused; "They (Damen) had a floating that sunk at the Dock which weighed more than 1,000 tons in weight, and the responsibility of the floating Dry Dock that sunk is from "The Holding", but "The Holding" is not saying anything! They are remaining quiet, because it is their responsibility! To take that out of the floating dock; out of the ocean, how much money would it be? It would be more than twenty (20) million dollars and that money, we must pay it, the government must pay for it!"
