2019 CARIFTA JUNIOR CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP IN CURACAO

Willemstad, Curacao. After 7 years of hosting The CARIFTA's Junior Chess Championships firstly in Barbados in 2012, Curacao is granted hosting rights for the eight (8th) Annual Tournament. Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago has each won the Championships 2 times and Suriname for the first time last year. There are 11 Chess federations competing for the coveted acknowledgement as the best throughout the Caribbean.

The weight is on The Curacao's Chess Federation's shoulder to bring home its first ever CARIFTA Junior Chess Championship title and according to the Curacao's Chess Federation's President Michell Fayad, he expects that in the open and female categories, they have some strong hopefuls.
Michell Fayad responded; "For females; we have our national champion; Ailen Mena, also Taqesyah Marcos and Mariana Sanches are players that can excel and finish in the top, and in the open category; Frederic Simonis and Timothy Carolina, as well as Mariana Sanchez are expected to do well."
There are 184 participants from 11 participating Chess Federations competing in 3 age divisions and in 2 categories of Open and Females.

The Chess Federations from Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, US Virgin Islands and Curacao (hosting member) are competing in a 7 rounded, 4 day championship series to determine the Caribbeans brightest in Chess in their following age divisions and categories.

First rounds of the championship starts at 9:30am on Friday, April 19th 2019 and is schedule to culminate on Monday, April 23rd 2019 at 7:30pm with its final of 7 rounds.

Chess is a family sport, is undisputed from the registered participants in The 2019 CARIFTA Junior Chess Championship being hosted in Curacao. In fact; 1 out of every 4 participants are siblings, that is 25% of the total participants. That is about 46 individuals coming from 20 different families, with the Maharaj surname family from Trinidad and Tobago entering 4 relatives.

The Curacao's Chess Federation has 25 times as much participants as the smallest entry by, The United States Virgin Islands Chess Federation and The Antigua & Barbuda both with 2 entry participants.

​Samirah Gobin; from Guyana; stood out as an entry because of her dual entry in the open category under 16, as well as her entry in females category under 20 age group.
JJosepha News spoke with a grandmother of one of the participants from The Barbados Chess Federation and she is in Barbados, and she expressed her love for her grandson, who is 13 years old and accompanied by his mother. The proud and caring grandmother wishes her grandson the very best in his performance in the 2019 CARIFTA Junior Chess Championship being hosted in Curacao.
