CHAIRMAN OF CURACAO ELECTORAL COUNCIL DISCUSSES UPCOMING GENERAL ELECTION By JJosepha News Twitter.com/JJosephaNews Willemstad, Curacao. Last Friday was the final day for voter registration in Curacao ahead of the upcoming general election on September 30, 2016. Saturday, August 20, and Sunday, August 21, are the primary selection days, when candidates vying for a seat in the next session of Curacao’s parliament, the Staten Van Curacao, must obtain at least one percent of the eligible voting population in Curacao in order to qualify to participate in the general election. On Friday, chairman of the Supreme Electoral Council, Raymond ‘Pacheco’ Römer, took the time to respond to the following questions concerning the electoral process in Curacao. Josefina Josepha: Your department has stated that today, July 8, is the deadline for voter registration? Raymond ‘Pacheco’ Römer: Yes; voter registration deadline is today, and everyone living in Curacao that is eligible and wants to participate in the 2016 election must register at the Kranshi by today, Friday, July 8, 2016. I am sorry but Monday, July 11, 2016, will be too late. JJ: What is the basic requirement for a person to be a candidate in this 2016 election? RPR: If you want to be a candidate, you must be a registered voter first and to be eligible for that you have to be a Dutch citizen and 18 years or older. If the person was living in Curacao but is not registered then, sorry, you cannot vote in this election. You must come and register by today. For example, as I explained last Monday to the media, if someone went to live in Holland for one year, and then came back to Curacao to live and wanted to vote in this 2016 election, then that person will not be able to do so if they have not already registered first at the Kranshi. Again; they must register at the Kranshi by today! JJ: When is the last date for a candidate or party to register? RPR: If a person wants to be a candidate, they first have to be a registered voter, and the last date to register a party is Friday, August 8, 2016, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. JJ: If a person is a Dutch citizen and voted in the last election, and did not go outside of the country, does he/she need to register to vote? RPR: If a person voted in the last election and have those particulars as you outlined, then such a person should be registered already at the Kranshi. JJ: How would a person know if he/she is or is not registered on the voters list, if they have not received their voter’s registration card? RPR: If a person doesn’t know if they are registered, then he or she can go to the Kranshi and ask if they are on the list. However, if the person is not on the list, then such a person in such a category can go to the court and have his or her name put on the list. JJ: If a person has not received their registration card and is not sure that he or she is registered in the voters’ registration list, can that person call in and ask? RPR: That’s a good question. I will have to check if a person can call in; but there are possibly some security details that may not permit that, but I will gladly answer that question later, but let me inform you that such a person wanting to find out their status so that they can be proactive, then they can always simply send an email to the council at info@kse.cw and they will receive their answer, that is not a problem.
