Willemstad, Curacao. On a Thursday, August 22nd 2019, around 03:00am, a massive fire erupted at the Curacao Tax Office located in the Regentesselaan area. It is alleged that the fire was caused by individuals and was not an accident.
COURT CASE
On March 5th 2021, the Curacao court house treated the case against Mr. S. Francillon, where he is being accused of sending 2 men to do the job of burning the tax office down. Francillon is also being accused of stealing water and electricity along with money laundering. Curacao Fiscal Janssen and Fiscal Teepel have made an official demand for 10 years imprisonment for Francillon. The 10 years is excluding the 15 months he has been imprisoned. The Fiscal also requested the order for Francillon to pay 42 million guilders for damages caused to the tax office.
FIRE DAMAGES
From preliminary investigations, it was reported that the fire was first caused from the inside of the building, then from the outside. The south side of the building, on the lower floor suffered considerable damage; this was the area where the tax office charges and receives money. The Public Prosecutor's Office has proof and evidence against the accused: Mr. S. Francillon. This happened after Mr. Rudy Medina was detained on the island of Bonaire, and started to make declarations which brought the authorities to also detain Mr. Sergo Francilon to treat the case. During the case's treatment, it became known that 14 thousand guilders were paid to burn the tax office down. According to experts calculation of the damages amount to, a total of 42 million guilders.
WHY BURNING THE TAX OFFICE?
Various witnesses were heard and different things were found that incriminated Mr. S. Francillon. One of Aqualectra's (water supply company) workers, also found and confirmed that there was indeed a stealing of water and electricity by Francillon. When the Fiscal confronted the accused with these accusations, the accused expressed that he does not have anything to do with this case and that he is innocent.
The Public Prosecutor's Office thinks that the accused has different reasons to burn down the tax office. One of the reasons was that the tax office charged him a large sum of money. The court will dictate a sentence on March 26th 2021.
