Willemstad, Curacao. It was understood that, based on a motion by the Curacao parliament, MPs believe that the Netherlands Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK) would have too much influence in Curacao's affairs, if the Coho Consensus Act is passed. For that reason, the 21 members of parliament asked the government (in the motion) to renegotiate the sensitive points of the Coho Consensus Law with the Netherlands government.
COHO HAS BECOME A CONCERN IN THE COMMUNITY
As long as a national ordinance project presented by the government has not been approved by Curacao Parliament, it can be modified by them, at the proposal of one or more members, and by the government. The Curacao Constitution (article 78) and the Dutch Constitution (article 84) have the same understanding to start the renegotiation process.
Members of Parliament also said that there should be more clarity on financial investments, which are necessary to grow the local economy. According to a majority in parliament, many elements in the proposed Coho law affect the autonomy of Curacao, which has been a matter of concern in the community.
