Twitter: @JJosephaNews EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH FEMALE NOVEL WRITER ZIMBABWE GRACE MAGURI SURVIVOR AND ZIMBABWE NOVEL AUTHOR: GRACE MAGURI By: JJosephaNews Reading time: 3:00 min Twitter: @JJosephaNews THE INTERVIEW Josefina JOSEPHA: Grace, please introduce yourself to our readers and tell us how your writer have become? Grace Maguri: “My name is Grace Maguri. I am a 46 year old teacher from Zimbabwe. I remember growing up in a normal middle class family. I hated sports and loved reading. I got into trouble several times because of my life of reading. When I was ten, I wrote a story for a class assignment. I remember it vividly. It was called the day I will never forget. (How ironic) That day the teacher called me and asked me where I had copied it from. In her estimation, I wasn't smart enough to write such a story. I insisted I wrote the story myself because I was naively happy that she was impressed by my work. I was sent to the headmaster and given a stick for 'lying'. Then I learned that the truth didn't always set you free.” “After that I wrote a lot of stories. Much I have lost or destroyed. I never dared to pursue an active career in writing. Rather play it safe and enter the teaching profession. I didn't stop writing. My friends and loved ones had the opportunity to read and share my work. It was only 3 years ago... during the pandemic... that I decided to defy the negative thoughts and finish my first novel. I say first, because there are many more to come out.” MOTIVATION Josefina JOSEPHA: Grace, what was your motivation to challenge negative thoughts? Grace Maguri: “My motivation? I was recently divorced. A survivor of a physically abusive relationship. When I discussed it with different people, I came across a lot of stereotypes and judgments. Some were terrible enough to make me question my position. When I talked to a friend, we noticed that few stories in our communities were about survivors. Women who were brave enough to stand up for themselves were often labeled with all kinds of things. Yes, legislation is important and all awareness campaigns are important, but as long as women have a default button somewhere that makes them ashamed to protect themselves, they will never leave abusive situations. So we decided to start telling the stories of the survivors. They celebrate. Teach the next generation that it's okay to protect yourself. Hence my first novel: Picking Ants.' THE NOVEL Josefina JOSEPHA: Tell us about your novel... Grace Maguri: 'In the novel, we follow Portia as she tries to find her mother. She comes face to face with some inconvenient truths about herself. The realization that that privilege gave her a different perspective on life. That women are treated differently according to their degree of vulnerability and that the greatest weapon women have against a whole range of injustices is an enlightened mind. She falls in love and fights the political and economic issues that affect these relationships.” Grace book is available on Amazon | Song of the Survivor This interview was very inspiring! INTERVIEW MET ZIMBABWE'S VROUWELIJKE SCHRIJVER; GENADE MAGURI OVERLEVENDE EN AUTEUR VAN ZIMBABWE; GENADE MAGURI Door: JJosephaNews Leestijd: 3:00 min. Grace Maguri: “Mijn naam is Grace Maguri. I was sent to the headmaster's office and caned for lying. That was when I learnt that "the truth did not always set you free."

“I wrote many stories after that incident, many I either; lost or were destroyed, but I never dared to actively pursue a career in writing, so; preferring to play it safe; I entered the teaching profession."

"However; I did not stop writing; short stories. My friends and loved ones had an opportunity to read and share my work.
