HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATION IS HAPPENING IN CURACAO AND IT'S NO SECRET ANYMORE!

Willemstad, Curacao. On February 1st The Curacao Public Prosecution Office (OM) informed the public about a sad and perverted situation. A case called Venus where it involve Human Rights violation and sexual exploitation, which is not the first time on the island.
RAIDING MOMENT: THE ROLE OF THE POLICE OFFICER
On September 9th 2018, the OM had ordered the raid of a Nightclub in Otrobanda called; "La Tasca Nightclub", which was eventually closed.
In the investigation, there were four (4) suspects:
a) Two of which were the owners: Michael Koense and his wife,
b) The sister of one of the owners; and,
c) A Police Officer; who is presently now on trial.

Also, the raids at four different addresses uncovered:
Twenty-one (21) Venezuelans, who were staying illegally on the island. Of those; seventeen (17) women were arrested who worked as "Trago Girls".
Michael Koense and his wife are the principal suspects in "The Venus Club case".
According to the OM, "The Police Officer is said to have been working for Michael Koense and his wife, and was a trusted person for the principal suspects. The Police Officer is also a suspect of Human Trafficking and Human Smuggling”.

The policeman in this case, compromised the integrity of the entire Curacao Police Force and his position, and failed to stop and or report the crime of Human Trafficking, and therefore the police officer colluded and promoted the action of the illegal activity to continue.

The OM continued; “The Courthouse denied any petition to suspend preventive arrest against the The Club owners and the Police Officer”.
The OM explained, “this case is about Human Trafficking, Human Smuggling and Illegal employment to Illegal people.
In the case of Human Trafficking, there must be a certain pressure rate and exploitation. Following the Public Prosecution Office, this was the case for sure! The victims were in a vulnerable position, and in a manner, needed to work for 6 to 7 days of the week, even until 11 am in the morning. The victims were, prohibited to take a break or to eat. The victims needed to constantly entertain and dance with the men visiting the club, so that the men buy them drinks”.
IS SLAVERY STILL ALIVE IN CURACAO?
The OM continued; “The owners got a lot of money out of this! If the women did not do what they were told to do or follow the rules, they were getting a high penalty. The women were barely paid and were forced to pay the debt that they had from the older owner. A witness declared, that at times; she was so tired; that she used to sleep on the floor in the bathroom during working hours".
It was reported that the victims were locked up during the day and were not allowed to contact their family members or friends. The case is still ongoing and must be try in court.

NEW ARREST
Additionally, another man from Venezuela has also been arrested in The Venus case and is awaiting for his first appearance in court.
PRISON STAFF NOT HAPPY
From latest reports it appeared that things have gotten worst within the penal system, resulting in the prison staff setting an ultimatum that the Minister of Justice; Quincy Girigorie; has until April 23rd 2019, to make a commitment to solve the following prison guards complaints:
* Unsafe working environment
* Insufficient amount of staff
* Request better management
