BEST SELLING AUTHOR; KOOS VERKAIK; DISCUSSES FANTASY AND FACTS By: JJosephaNews Reading Time: 5:00 mins. Twitter: @JJosephaNews THE INTERVIEW Josefina JOSEPHA: The main reason for interviewing you is the fact that you signed so many contracts lately… Koos Verkaik: Yes, it has been raining contracts! Twenty or more, and each about different titles. Many, many new books to come. The printers are doing overtime now! MULTIPLE PUBLISHING HOUSES AND TECHNOLOGY MAKING A GLOBE OUT OF A VILLAGE… Josefina JOSEPHA: It seems interesting, you are Dutch, yet; your publishers are in India and in the USA, is there a reason for this? Koos Verkaik: Well actually; also in Greece now; as well! Anima Publications in Athens has offered me a great contract for thirty-one (31) titles. They are already busy translating now. Pharos Books in India publishes my books in multiple languages: English, French, Spanish, Hindi, Japanese and Russian. Additionally; there are two great publishers in the USA who contracted me; Outer Banks Publishing Group and Angry Eagle Publishing. Technology has made a village out of our globe; everyone is reachable; now-a-days! I had a zoom meeting with two publishers. Europe, India and the USA on one computer screen. For many people this is nothing special any more, but for me, I still think this is a miracle; because not so long ago, all we had was a fax machine and a telephone to communicate! AN AUTHOR’S FINGERPRINT Josefina JOSEPHA: Very interesting! Technology, it seems; more than often you combine that with history, with magic and the occult, and that seems to be your patented trademark, is that a fair synopsis? NICOLAES NIMBUS Koos Verkaik: I guess so. In my novel Nicolaes Nimbus I write specifically about that; High Tech versus Ancient Magic! Scientists and wealthy owners of high-tech companies have pumped millions of dollars into the search for immortality. But does the future look bright or is there disaster waiting behind the horizon of time? The world is getting more complicated by the day, but who’s actually in charge? A group of scientists in Germany have unmasked a cheating visionary. An intriguing phenomenon from the past turns up. Who is Nicolaes Nimbus? Is he an immortal man of flesh and blood from our ancient past? The hunt is on! The secret is priceless! Who is in control, the scientists or the mystic? Nicolaes Nimbus embraces modern developments… and warns against ancient magic that never dies, waiting for the right time to manifest itself. DANCE OF THE JESTER And then there is Dance of the Jester. Reading between the lines and noticing the signs of the times… It is about the past, it is about the future, but actually; it is about present problems; what happens to our beautiful world, when the wrong people are in command? Suddenly, at the end of the twenty-first century, the world changes. The tycoons rule and name themselves kings. They are times of extravagance and decadence, extreme power and richness. The world is one big party. And there is chaos! No one seems to wonder how this all came to be. No one seems to wonder what is actually happening. No one seems to care about anything anymore. Except for some odd outsiders. One of them is Oscar Man, the illegitimate son of tycoon Otto Man. Once he was a prince; then he became a pariah, with nothing to lose for himself but so much to win for the world… In these turbulent times, the Second Renaissance, strange creatures come into power and try to subject every single human being to their will. They make the poor jester; Oscar Man; dance, but ultimately, Oscar will manage to solve the biggest problem the world has ever faced! KOOS’S AUDIENCE SPECTRUM Josefina JOSEPHA: You also wrote a series of children’s books. That is a very interesting audience spectrum; writing for adults as well as writing for children, would you expand on that? Koos Verkaik: More times than often, I write a novel and a children’s book at the same time! One of my series of children’s books has sold more than 450,000 copies in The Netherlands alone. Soon my series; Saladin the Wonder Horse, will be out in different languages. Additionally, I am working on book volume 14 of my favorite series of children’s books, Alex and the Wolpertinger. I Can’t wait to have all those translations on the shelves; in: English, Spanish, French, Greek… Hindi, Japanese and Russian. Frankly; to be honest, I hardly realize that this is all arranged for me now and it makes me very proud, yet so very humble, both at the same time! THE MONSTER INN The first book in the Wolpertinger series is The Monster Inn: This is a story about Alex, the boy from the Alps. A long time ago he went in search of adventures in the land of King Clover, in Bavaria. People never stop talking about his special friendship with a wolpertinger… What are wolpertingers? Where do they come from? Are they little monsters or friends, teasers or helpful creatures? When the dandelions grow in the Alpine meadows, they suddenly appear. But they do a lot more than eating yellow flowers and swimming about in icy cold brooks… Alex knows all about it, because his best friend is Ludo the wolpertinger. Together; they both search for gold. By order of Prince Ruff Rumble, the giant son of the king… IN THE BEGINNING Josefina JOSEPHA: I understand that you actually first started in this field; writing when you were only seven (7) years old, and your first work; a comic strip, scotty clay, was published when you were sixteen (16) years old, so how did that all started? Koos Verkaik: Most of the publishers in The Netherlands were also the owners of printing companies. They needed hard working authors who were able to write in every genre. I taught myself to do that. I wrote regional novels and thrillers and even dozens of feel-good novels for the big market; I was able to write four (4) books of 150 pages each month. The publisher gave me free reign and finally he stepped back, so that I could deliver my work directly to the distributor. A lot of work and in the meantime I managed to write my own novels. In my ‘Sturm und Drang’ period, when I was able to write all night long! NIGHT LAMP Josefina JOSEPHA: Talking about writing during the night – what is that story about ‘Nightlamp’? Koos Verkaik: Ah! ‘Nightlamp’ is the title of a Jack Vance novel, one of my favorite writers. Yes! That title is very special to me, because I actually had a night lamp. As a boy, I wrote as much as I could, but my parents didn’t allow me to do that late at night. My father’s bookkeeper understood that I had the urgent need to write and gave me a special light bulb that he himself had used during the Second World War. During that time it was forbidden to make light at night, so that pilots could not determine where to drop their bombs. The light bulb was covered with a black tar substance and only a small beam of light shone down on my writing desk. My parents never knew that I wrote till the sun came up. As a matter of fact, I can still remember that special smell when the light bulb was burning. THE INTRICACIES OF COMBINING FANTASY AND FACTS Josefina JOSEPHA: Your writing style has a tendency to intricately combine fantasy and facts, would you expand on that? Koos Verkaik: I have a couple of thousand books in my workroom, most of them non-fiction. I collect books about magic, the occult, UFO’s, alchemy etc., but also books about history and about what our future will look like. Artificial Intelligence is so intriguing. What if certain apparatus will tell us how to live? If a computer tells you to go to the hospital and you refuse, will you still keep your health insurance? How human are you still, when your body is full of technical equipment? And… is there still room for fantasy, when we finally know everything? I wrote about that in my first novel, written at the age of 18, and I still write about all that. I Just finished a new novel, Hellequin, and it is all about new developments of the human mind. Some people who have been pestered all the time, are in the possession of a new defending system and strike back! MORE TITLES, MORE BOOKS, MORE STORIES AND MORE WORK… Josefina JOSEPHA: So; what can we look forward to; from you Koos; in 2022, a lot more new titles soon? Koos Verkaik: You bet! New novels, new children’s books, new translations. I am very happy with my publishers and the vast opportunities they have given me to showcase my work all over the world. And I will keep on writing! About fantasy and facts… Thank you so much for this interview, greetings from The Netherlands! Josefina JOSEPHA: Koos, the pleasure has been mine, and it is a welcoming experience to share this with all your readers, followers, the JJosepha News Community and the world! This interview was uniquely inspired and uniquely done because it is always a blessing to follow up and a uniquely humbling experience to venture into the mind of a talented author and best seller.
