Willemstad, Curacao. The Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO) upcoming State of The Industry Conference (SOTIC) 2015 to be held in Curacao this week will see some changes in the list of speakers, with some indicating their inability to attend.
Following our first article on SOTIC 2015, JJosephaNews attempted to contact a selected sample of five of the initial 15 speakers, in order to get:
(i) Their comments on the expected impact of their presentation in achieving its goals as it relates to regional stakeholders and those at the conference in the region and in the host country of Curacao; as well as
(ii) The significance for Curasaleno inhabitants.
The list included:
1) Karolin Troubetzkoy – Executive Director, Marketing and Operations of Anse Chastanet and Jade Mountain Resorts in Saint Lucia.
2) Maurice Jenkins – Division Director, Information Systems, and the principal advisor to the Aviation Director at the Miami International Airport on all matters related to information management and information technology.
3) Andrew Houghton – Area Vice President for Marriott International Inc. in the Caribbean. [CANCELLED]
4) Robin Hayes – President and Chief Executive Officer of JetBlue Airways, and the keynoter for the conference.
5) Rosa Harris – Director of the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism.
Since our previous story on SOTIC 2015, there have been eight (six males and two females, who can be grouped into three government-related, two non-governmental organization-related and three private business related) additional speakers added to the speaking engagements on the onecaribbean.org website.
However, CTO communications specialist Johnson JohnRose noted, "There are more than just eight additional speakers for the conference."
On Friday, JohnRose, indicated that one speaker had cancelled.
"Andrew Houghton is no longer coming; he advised us on Tuesday,” he said.
In a roundtable discussion on the lack of timely response from the invited speakers, one person suggested, "It’s more likely to get a letter from Bill and Hillary Clinton first before Mr Hayes responds.”
JJosephaNews is still awaiting the initial response of the other three of the four remaining invited speakers and JohnRose advised, "I think it might be best to catch them when they are here."
He further explained that "Mr. Houghton has been promoted as a speaker, but advised CTO that due to an urgent matter he can no longer make it. This is not unusual. However, we have a very strong panel of speakers for the event."
However, the energies of Maurice Jenkins, Division Director, who functions as the principal advisor to the Aviation Director at the Miami International Airport, must be applauded. The Miami International Airport (MIA), which was founded in 1928, offers more flights to Latin America and the Caribbean than any other US airport and is America’s second-busiest airport for international passengers, boasting a lineup of over 100 air carriers and is the top US airport for international freight.
After JJosephaNews contacted Jenkins, responded via mobile phone while he was in India, less than two hours after receiving the message: "Good day and hope all is well. Currently I am in India and preparing to travel back. I will need a day or so after I get back to address your questions for you. Thank you. All the best."
The SOTIC 2015 Conference is scheduled to open on Wednesday and concludes on Friday.
