Willemstad; Curacao. The Netherlands-Caribbean Foundation of Clinical Higher Education (NASKHO) is presenting a three day symposium on social medicine in Curacao, commencing on Friday.
According to NASKHO, the symposium has two prime learning objectives:

• First, exposing the functions of the companies and insurance physicians, the dilemmas they run into in practice and the possible and plausible solutions for the dilemmas, and

• Secondly, creating and promoting communication channels between social medicine and the other actors in the field, such as health care providers in the curative sector, employers (organizations) and employees (organizations). In addition, arriving at a resolution or coming to a policy and/or agreements on possible cooperation between these actors to put employees in sustainable working conditions without occupational hazards or risks, to ensure healthy employees remain working at a productive level, or to give sick employees timely and adequate reintegration into the working calendar.

The symposium topics will span the areas of social health dilemmas; guarantees in medical secrecy and labour disputes in social medicine; and, lastly, difficult and unexplained symptoms in social medicine.

The opening ceremony’s featured speaker was Curacao’s minister of health and environment, Dr Bernard Whiteman, who was due to talk about the collaboration within the health system as the day’s topic. Other presenters and speakers for the opening evening’s event included E. van der Hoeven, Professor Dr J.W. Groothoff and Dr M. Badloe.
