Bees play an important role in the natural environment, particularly through pollination. At the same time, bee colonies can become dangerous when people or animals unintentionally disturb a nest. On Curaçao, several bee-related incidents were reported in July 2025, including attacks that resulted in serious injuries and deaths. The situation prompted the Ministry of Health, Environment and Nature to issue public safety guidance. BEES ARE IMPORTANT - BUT THEIR NESTS MUST BE RESPECTED The recent incidents have raised concern among residents, particularly people who may be especially vulnerable to severe reactions following insect stings. However, the government warning emphasizes an important point: bees generally defend their colony when they perceive their nest to be under threat. Bees are important pollinators. As they move between flowers in search of nectar and pollen, they help transfer pollen between plants and support the reproduction of many flowering plants and the production of numerous fruits and crops. Their ecological and agricultural importance makes the protection of healthy bee populations an important environmental issue. The need for caution, however, is equally important when people encounter an established colony or swarm. A bee colony should not be treated as something to approach, disturb or remove without appropriate knowledge and equipment. Instead: • Do not approach, touch or disturb the nest; • Leave the area calmly and put as much distance as possible between yourself and the nest; • Do not attempt to kill the bees or remove them yourself, as disturbing a colony can trigger defensive behavior. The government also advises residents to remain alert when they notice bees repeatedly flying around outdoor lights in the morning. This can be an indication that a nest or colony is located nearby. PRECAUTIONS FOR PEOPLE WORKING OR SPENDING TIME IN RISK AREAS People working in wooded areas, abandoned buildings, undeveloped land or other locations where nests may be present should take additional precautions: • Avoid strong fragrances such as cologne, perfume and aftershave when working in areas where bees may be present; • When possible, plan outdoor work for the cooler hours of the morning, when bee activity may be lower; • Pay attention to flowering vegetation and areas where bee activity is concentrated, particularly during periods when flowers are abundant. The July 2025 guidance also noted increased bee activity in connection with seasonal conditions. Residents should therefore remain observant in areas where natural vegetation, flowering plants or possible nesting locations are present. IF YOU FIND A BEEHIVE OR NEST Do not attempt to remove, destroy or otherwise handle a beehive or established colony yourself. A nest can contain a large number of bees, and disturbing it without proper equipment and experience can create a dangerous situation.
