SLAVERY HISTORY AND MESSAGE By: JJosephaNews Reading Time: 2:15 mins. Twitter: @JJosephaNews Willemstad, Curacao. On January 13th 2022, King King Willem-Alexander explained his decision on the use of the Gouden Koets (Golden Coach/golden carriage) in a video message. The golden carriage will only start riding again if "All citizens of this country (the Netherlands) should be able to feel that they are equal and are given fair opportunities. Everyone should be able to feel part of what has been built up in our country and be proud of it. Also the Dutch with ancestors who were enslaved in the East or the West." ABOUT THE GOLDEN COACH The Golden Coach is a coach owned by the Dutch royal family and used by them. The Gold Coach was presented to Queen Wilhelmina by the residents of Amsterdam at her investiture in 1898. Every year, the Dutch monarch was carried from the Noordeinde Palace to the Ridderzaal to make the Speech from the Throne or to attend the wedding of the Prince of Orange or the Princess of Orange. The coach is made of teak wood, which has been heavily gilded. It is embellished with Nicolaas van der Waay's paintings and many symbolic decorations. The coach was designed in the manner of the Dutch Renaissance. THE KING MESSAGE According to the King: "Our history contains much to be proud of. At the same time, it also offers learning material for recognizing mistakes and avoiding them in the future. We cannot rewrite the past. We can try to come to terms with it together. This also applies to the colonial past. There is no point in condemning and disqualifying what has happened through the lens of our time. Simply banning historical objects and symbols is certainly not a solution either. Instead, it takes a concerted effort that goes deeper and lasts longer. An effort that unites us rather than divides us. The restored Golden Coach has been on display in the Amsterdam Museum since June last year. The exhibition will end in February. The Gouden Koets will only be able to drive again when the Netherlands is ready. And that is not the case now. All citizens of this country should be able to feel that they are equal and have fair opportunities. Everyone should be able to feel part of what has been built up in our country and be proud of it. Also the Dutch with ancestors who were unfree in the East or the West. We are not there only with beautiful laws, such as Article 1 of the Constitution. As long as there are people living in the Netherlands who feel the pain of discrimination on a daily basis, the past will still cast its shadow over our time and it will not be over yet. Listening to and understanding each other are essential conditions for achieving reconciliation and taking away pain in people's souls. I know that we can do it, even if it is a long and difficult road. I understand very well everyone's differing feelings. Only if we take this road to reconciliation together, the Golden Coach can drive again on Prinsjesdag, the day on which we celebrate our democracy and our solidarity as Dutch people." The reigning King of the Netherlands addresses a joint session of the States-General of the Netherlands on Prinsjesdag to deliver his speech from the throne. The major characteristics of government policy for the upcoming legislative session are outlined in this speech. WHERE CAN YOU SEE THE GOLDEN COACH According to the Goude Koets site: "The Golden Coach can be seen in the Amsterdam Museum! It can be viewed again for the first time since the major restoration that began in 2015. Amsterdammers donated the Golden Coach to the young Queen Wilhelmina for her inauguration in 1898.
